MBC Lightweight: Jeremy Ginter (Jr, Toledo Whitmer, 138) Ginter made an impressive run to the finals with tech falls against Bryton Miller (Kettering Fairmont) in the Round of 64 and Luke Miller (Louisville) in the Round of 32 before a major decision victory over Williams (Firelands) to a reach the quarterfinals. Yet another tech fall, this time over one of last season's spotlight winners, Jeff Camp (Patrick Henry) got Ginter to the semifinals. In the semis, Jeremy would face the 2023 PIT Champion, Owen Miller (Oak Harbor) and continued to dominate with a 10-0 major decision. In the finals, Ginter matched up against Ashton Homan (#2 seed and #1 ranked D3 wrestler at 138 lbs). The match was by far the toughest in the tournament for Ginter, but netted a 5-0 championship victory.

MBC Heavyweight: Max Ray (Sr, Tiffin Columbian, 190) In perhaps the toughest weight class in the tournament, Max Ray of Tiffin Columbian and NCAA-D1 Ohio University commit proved to be the top dog. The top half of the bracket was so tough, in fact, that three top-2 wrestlers were in that section. Ray, seeded #4 in the tournament scored falls over Fair (Massillon Washington) and Wymer (Anthony Wayne) before a major decision over Weimer (Springfield) to reach the semi-finals. His opponent? #1 Kyle Snider (CVCA) who had just squeaked out a 2-1 victory over #9? seed Andrew Liber (#2 ranked D1 wrestler at 190 in the State of Ohio from Toledo St. Francis). Max handled Snider with a 3-1 victory. In the finals, Ray proved to be unmatched as he defeated Wyatt Ferguson (Oak Hills) 7-0. For what it's worth, the current D2 Rankings have Ray #1 and Snider #2. It's going to be a great end of the season battle for sure!

Napoleon Gold Medal - Mason Ducat (So, Defiance, 132) Super Sophomore Mason Ducat has already beat some pretty good wrestlers this year including an upset victory over Hudson Goebel (Findlay, NCAA-D1 Illinois commit) at the Defiance Tri-State Border War; however, going 9-0 in a 2-day dual tournament is something not many wrestlers accomplish. Ducat's 9 wins came against Barker (Bucyrus) by fall in 0:29, Robby Bennett (Fairview and fellow Team Toledo teammate) 12-6, Nate Tipton (Genoa) by fall in 2:00, Munoz (Huron) by tech fall 18-1, Isaac Westhoven (Napoleon) by fall in 2:47, a forfeit against Sandusky Perkins, Shawn Parrin (Toledo St. Francis) by fall in 0:14, Bergman (Versailles) by fall in 3:11, and Gavin Ridenour (Wapakoneta) by fall in 3:48. In all, Ducat only spent a total of 23:18 on the mat in 8 contested matches.

Phoenix Contos (So, Toledo Waite, 126) The Contos name is synonymous with wrestling in Toledo. The latest with the surname transferred to Toledo Waite from Genoa last year, in which he finished 4th in the state in D3 at 120. Phoenix came into the tournament undefeated at 20-0 and was relegated to the #3 seed. He made short work of his first two opponents with pins in 30 and 22 seconds over Davis (Troy Christian) and Garcia (Northview), respectively. In the quarterfinals, Contos defeated Liam Hatgas (Holy Name) 17-6. Up 9-6 in the semi-finals, his opponent from Firelands, #2 seed Ruben Pina-Lorenz was forced to withdraw by injury at the 5 minute mark. In the highlight match of the tournament, Phoenix broke out to an early 8-2 lead over #1 seed Ryan Avalos of Perrysburg before the 2022 D1 State Runner-up at 120 came roaring back scoring a takedown with 6 seconds left in the match to tie the score at 10-10. Phoenix acted upon his name and rose from the mat scoring an escape just before time expired to win the PIT title. He now sits at 25-0 and will most assured by ranked #1 in the next BoroFan rankings.

Owen Miller (Sr, Oak Harbor, 138) Miller went 1-2 at the OHSAA D3 State Championship last season at 138 lbs. However, Owen is a very determined wrestler. Having to make scratch weight at 138 for the first time this season, he showed that determination running all the way to the PIT finals. Miller came in as the #3 seed. His route to the finals was nothing short of a workman effort as he won 7-2 over Jurcevich (Defiance) in the Round of 32, 10-3 over Cone (Delta) in the Round of 16, and 10-0 over Dominic Grecol (Strongsville) to reach the semifinals. Miller met Christian Fried of Western Reserve Academy in that match squeaking out a 4-2 decision to make the finals versus Cole Evans of Perrysburg. Evans made a large bump up in the lineup as he was the 2022 106-lb D1 State Champion. Miller got a takedown 13 seconds into the match and then did not relinquish control only giving up a stalling point with 8 seconds left in the match. It wasn't the prettiest of matches, but the 2-1 score was enough to win a PIT title!

Joey Blaze IV (Sr, Perrysburg, 165) Blaze is one of the best wrestlers in the country, with some publications listing him as high as the #2 wrestler in the country at 165. The Purdue-commit is accustomed to winning tournaments and his Senior year at the PIT was no different. #1 seed protected his home turf quite well accumulating 5 wins to improve his season record to 26-0. Joey made quick work of Zahir (Medina Highland) with a pin in 1:16. He then defeated Nickel (Oak Harbor) by tech fall 22-5 before pinning Morehouse (Toledo St. John's) by pin in 1:34 to advance to the semifinals. In that match, he faced his teammate Nick Hartzell (the #4 seed, which shows just how strong Perrysburg is) by tech fall 23-8. But his dominance did not stop there. Blaze matched up against one of last week's TWF spotlight wrestler, #2 seed Zaidan Kessler of Wauseon (ranked #4 in D2) in the finals. The first period ended at 4-1 in favor of Blaze, but he quickly widened the gap in the second period and eventually won another PIT title by tech fall 25-10 with 19 seconds left in the match. For the record Joey has now won PIT titles at 126 (2020), 144 (2022) and 165 (2023). The 2021 event was canceled due to COVID-19.

Brecksville Holiday Tournament: Marcus Blaze (So, Perrysburg, 120) Brecksville was hands-down the top tournament over the Holidays and featured strong teams from Perrysburg, Dundee, Brecksville, Detroit CC among others. Marcus Blaze did what he normally does...won the tournament. En route to his Championship, Marcus had pins over Owen Simms (Granville) in 2:28, Josh Zimmer (Teays Valley) in 2:00, and Bobby Buchheit (Lisbon Beaver, #8-ranked in D2 at 120) in 3:02. One would think that Blaze would slow down once he reached the semi-finals, but instead he went out and tech-falled Kade Kluce (Dundee, MI) 18-3 in a battle of State Champions. In the finals, Marcus faced Jackson Blum (Lowell, MI), yet another State Champion and was victorious 3-0. Marcus is now 25-1 on the year with his only loss coming to Leo Deluca in the Quarterfinals of the Walsh Ironman on a penalty point in sudden victory. Perrysburg won the Brecksville tournament running away with 225.5 points to Dundee's 194.5 points in the 45-team field.

Medina Invitational Tournament: Zaidan Kessler (Sr, Wauseon, 165) The Medina Invite (MIT) is one of the tougher tournaments of the season with primarily in-state competition (up there with Brecksville, the PIT, and Maumee Bay Classic). The last 2 MIT tournaments were canceled due to COVID. Thankful that the tournament was back, Zaidan Kessler did not waste the chance making his Championship at 165 look rather easy. Kessler defeated Niko Kalamaras (Avon Lake) by pin in 0:51. He then won by pin in 0:43 over James Nespeca (Cloverleaf, #8-ranked in D2 at 165). In a bit of a controversial match, Zaidan would win in the semifinals over Tyler Hicks (Beavercreek, #11-ranked in D1 at 165) by disqualification due to a biting incident. In the finals Kessler faced Jack Marconi (Avon Lake, #12-ranked in D1 at 165). The result was similar to the others with a win by pinfall in 3:10. Wauseon would finish in 2nd place out of 40 teams.

Defiance Tri-State Borders Wars: Brodie Dominique (Jr, Archbold, 150) In what could easily be considered the toughest weight class in the Tri-State Border Wars (plus Wisconsin), Brodie Dominique dominated his way to the finals where he went into the first Top-Bottom overtime to secure a 2-1 victory. The 9th overall ranked Junior in the State of Ohio (According to Borofan) scored pinfalls over Graiden Troth (Wayne Trace), Hudson Pancoast (Swanton), and Caiden Maize (Eastwood) before being somewhat tested by #4 seed Jace Margraf (Sycamore Mohawk) in a 11-5 decision victory. In the Finals, Dominique squared off against Eugene Harney of Cincinnati Sycamore, who is the 13th overall ranked Junior in the State of Ohio. The match was constant chain-wrestling by both wrestlers and easily the most exciting over the 2-day event. Brodie looks to improve his finish at state this year as he previously finished 7th at 138 in 2021 and 2nd at 144 in 2022. Note that he also recorded his 100th career victory at the Archbold Frickers Duals earlier this year.
Denkins secures the match-winning takedown in sudden victory over Detroit CC (Photo by Bryan Knepper)
Week of 12/17: Wynton Denkins (Sr, Perrysburg) Perrysburg had a stellar Fricker's Duals this past weekend going 10-0 with a Championship victory over Detroit Central Catholic 39-25. There was perhaps no bigger individual victory than that of Senior Wynton Denkins (NCAA-D1 Campbell commit) over Clayton Jones (NCAA-D1 Michigan State commit and 2022 Michigan State Champ) at 150 lbs during that match. Perrysburg was leading 20-10 going into this pivotal match. The two battled relentlessly through the first period giving no ground to their opponent. Denkins would score the first point with an escape (after 2 cautions) in the second period. The third period saw Jones take the lead 4-1 after an escape, takedown, and 3rd caution on Denkins. But Wynton would not be denied as he scored an escape with 30 seconds left followed by a takedown with 22 seconds to go and a rideout. In sudden victory, Denkins scored a clutch takedown to win the match. While Perrysburg won by 14 points overall, the match stopped a potential momentum shift. Denkins ultimately went 9-0 in the tournament as he looks to win the OHSAA-D1 state title for the first time later this season.

Week of 12/17: Hayden Buhro (Sr, Oak Harbor) Senior Hayden Buhro of Oak Harbor recorded his 100th career victory en route to an individual championship at 175 lbs at the Bob Bailey Invite in Bellevue, Ohio on December 10th. He was also voted Most Valuable Wrestler. The pool-style tournament saw Buhro record wins over Julian Kopas (New London) by fall in 1:23, Stephan Dokovski (Amherst Steele) by fall in 0:21, and Gage Summit (Carey) in 5:57. In the finals, Hayden would defeat #2 seed Lance Rickle (Carey) by decision 9-5.

Week of 12/10: Myles Takats (Sr, Perrysburg) The #1 ranked D1 wrestler in the State of Ohio, Myles Takats, took the Walsh Jesuit Ironman by storm over the past weekend. Seeded 9th in arguably the toughest in-season high school tournament in the country, Myles defeated Julian King (Olentangy Liberty) by pin in 1:03 and #8 seed Dylan Newsome (Bishop Hartley, ranked #1 in D2) by decision 4-2 before losing to the #1 seed Rocco Welsh (Waynesburg Central, PA, Ohio State Commit) 11-5 in the quarterfinals. Welsh would go onto win the tournament in convincing fashion. In the consolation bracket, Takats defeated #10 seed Andrew Filip (Minisink Valley, NY) 5-2, #5 seed Dominic Federici (Wyoming Seminary) 13-2, and #7 seed Omaury Alvarez (Baylor, TN) 3-0 to reach the 3rd place match. In that match, Myles faced #4 seed Tyler Eise (Ponderosa, CO) in which he won his 6th match 4-2. As of 12/12/22, Takats is ranked #4 in the country at 175 lbs by MatScouts joining the Marcus Blaze (#3 at 120), Wynton Denkins (#18 at 150) and Joey Blaze (#2 at 165) in the National Rankings for Perrysburg.
